 Photosensitive liposomes can release API and other contents when triggered by light at a specific wavelength. Verteporfin (absorption wavelength 692nm) is used as the API of Visudyne® and is also a photosensitizer. It irradiates the lesion with a low-intensity, non-thermal red light source with a wavelength of 689±3nm, and photochemical reaction occurs in an aerobic environment to form monooxygen. Produce local cytotoxicity, and produce reactive oxygen free radicals, damage local neovascular endothelial cells, and help blood vessels close. This principle of action makes Visudyne®'s photodynamic therapy have the advantages of low toxicity and high selection.

 The photosensitive liposome is a unilamellar liposome. The phospholipid composition in the prescription is DMPC and EPG. The molar ratio of verteporfin to phospholipid is 1:8, and the final product has a particle size of about 150nm~300nm. Because of the lipophilicity of verteporfin, the encapsulation rate can be close to 100%.
